Freckles and Pigmentation

What causes Freckles and Pigmentation?

Uneven and excessive pigmentation and/or brown spots (age spots or liver spots) give the skin a dull and aged appearance. Pigmentary problems may result from a combination of earlier sun damage, hereditary conditions and exacerbated by internal hormonal irregularities.

Pigmentation results from melanin deposits and pigment producing cells (melanocytes), at various different depths under the skin surface. A variety of conditions cause abnormal pigmentation, including:

  • Freckles

  • Solar Lentigines / Keratoses

  • Melasma

  • Hori’s nevus / Nevus of Ota

  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation

  • Birthmarks and moles

  • Skin cancer

In addition, these different types of pigmentary disorders may sometimes coexist. Accurate diagnosis by an experienced clinician is critical to achieving successful treatment.
